Wanna Take A Ride?

Hi Eric,

My latest Bubbie adventure:

I decided that Bubbie needs more exercise. Since I’m only able to jog about 1 mile/day.  To ‘keep up’ with me Bubbie only has to ‘walk fast’.  While I’ve tried to increase my speed to get her into a slow ‘lope’ the cost to my lungs and muscles is just too much to pay.  So, I had observed a number of people in the neighborhood ‘running’ their dogs while on bicycles and thought this would be a great idea.

To start I went and GOOGLED: “Dog Biking” and discovered that this is something that needs to be taught.  Well, we know that Bubbie is ONE SMART DOG…so, I followed the ‘RULES’:

RULE #1:  It is best to use a mountain bike!  Well, good for me cause this is what I have:

Bike 1RULE #2:  Your dog should be at least 20# and be older than 1.5 years!  Well, good again, Bubbie fits the bill:

Bike 2

RULE #3:  “Introduce” the bike to the dog.  Let the dog sniff the bike so she will feel relaxed:

Bike 3RULE #4:  Train your dog over a few days to feel comfortable beside the bike.  To do this use a leash that will ‘play-out” so that she won’t get too close to the bike.  Also if she wants to run a little faster, the standard leash might be too inflexible.

Bike 4So, off we went. For three training sessions I just walked and scooted on the bike with my foot with Bubbie closely beside me.  I’m doing this on the street right in front of our house early in the morning.  So, today I get up at 7AM and haul out the bike, hook up the Bub’s and OFF WE GO!! She did so well, I thought, hell, why not get on the bike and pedal.  I did, and she loved it and ran slowly beside me.  I pedaled a little fast for the second round and…..BUBBIE TOOK OFF!!!!

Bike 5She ran so fast, the leash SNAPPED and fell into pieces.  She RAN LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL and waited for me at the gate!

Later this afternoon Gabe and I took her (me on the bike, him walking).  At about the halfway point, I took the old leash, hooked it around the handlebars and off we went. She was AMAZING and although I didn’t go too fast this time she was in a slow lope.

Today I ordered a DOG BIKING SYSTEM for the dog which looks amazing. With this system, she can actually run beside me and I won’t worry that I will be pulled from the bike.  Take a look at the video of it.  I’m really excited to be doing this with her. She’s so easy to train!

All That Glitters

Hi Eric,

Well, here is a funny story….two days before the company party the house was a mess of projects and jumbled furniture. Bubbie was both thrilled and a bit apprehensive. So, she was in her “exploration” mood for a couple of days – sniffing everything and following me around as I prepared all the projects for the kids. I went shopping on Thursday before the party and when I came home, I found three tubes of glitter all over the carpet and Bubbie’s face splattered. When she smiled at me it was really cute (too bad I didn’t get a picture). So, I swept and vacuumed it all up and didn’t think much more about it.  The day before the party I was out in the backyard with Raz who had come over to help bake cookies. We were out by the pond and I decided to water a little bit to remove the dog shit smells.

I go over to this one pile and, lo and behold….it’s literally GLITTERING!!!  Bubbie had shit solid gold!!! ….and silver….and blue….and red!!!!  Raz and I couldn’t stop laughing.

Great Stories of Bubkiss

Hi Eric,

Yes, all’s well… Story #1 for our journal:

Bubbie and the Cake incident….

It was our youngest grandson’s birthday. He requested a SMURF cake. My idea was to make a yummie blueberry cake (since Smurfs are blue). The cake I made cost about $20 in ingredients – two packages of frozen blueberries are about $12, a pint of buttermilk and a pound of butter – to name a few…plus a whole lemon and orange (peel) and a tablespoon of vanilla. BUT, I had ALL these ingredients on hand and I knew the cake would be a big hit.

The cake takes about two hours to make…it’s REALLY special. I made it using the SMURF form and it came out PERFECT – the blueberries were on the bottom, the cake was delicious and light…JUST THE THING.  I placed it on a rack to cool and pushed it as far back on the counter as possible as I know that Bubbie oftentimes “checks out” what is on the counter. Because of the blueberries being on the bottom of the cake, I placed a sheet of parchment paper under the rack. I then went to bed about the time Gabe got up (as I was jet lagged – I had stayed up all night and baked the cake during the night).

Gabe walked Bubbie and then took off for work….now the real story:

A half hour after Gabe left for work, I hear Bubbie crying outside the bedroom door. After a few hurdles and ricochets off the door, I get up in a stupor and let her inside. She jumps on the bed and snuggles for a little bit and then starts licking me to convince me to get up. She smells really good…sort of a lemony/vanilla fragrance. Finally, I get up and stagger to …. the kitchen to make myself some coffee.

I quickly see what happened to Mr. Smurf and put 2 and 2 together about Bubbie’s lemony/vanilla breath!  There in the middle of the kitchen floor, face down … is the Smurf cake. There were two big chunks missing (hmmm, wonder where those went?). Now here’s the funny part…I had enough ingredients to make ANOTHER cake – just enough in fact – even ONE extra orange and lemon.

The final part of the story – this cake was one of the biggest hits of all my cakes for taste….lesson learned: Bubbie knows a good cake is worth the effort!!!

Story #2 four our journal:

Bubbie, the Esther Williams of Israel…

Bubbie, it turns out is a lover of water. When she was VERY small, she learned to swim and climb out of the pool using the ladder (we have no shallow end steps). She was always sort of reluctant to dive into the pool on her own and especially so when there was no one in the pool. She had to be coaxed and cajoled and “encouraged” with various types of treats (steak and chicken being the best motivators). However, recently we noticed that she was pretty wet when she returned from her morning and afternoon sojourns in the backyard. Because her barking bothers our neighbor, we assumed they had been dousing her with the hose (which was just encouraging the barking because she loves the hose). So, we decided to keep an eye on things ….only to discover the following:

Bubbie loves her red soccer ball. She loves to throw it to you when you’re in the pool swimming – you are then supposed to throw it back to her and she will bounce it back to you (rather directly) using her nose or, she will chase the ball if you throw it over her head. She then tosses it back into the pool. If you don’t meet her timetable for throwing the ball back to her, she simply jumps into the pool with you, grabs the ball and climbs out the ladder with it in her mouth. To our knowledge she NEVER did this without someone in the pool…until recently.

We were watching her in the yard in the early months of the summer. It’s REALLY hot and humid here and she gets warm. So, we saw her running around with the ball in her mouth, throwing it and chasing it herself…then she did something we didn’t expect. She threw the ball into the pool by tossing her neck and hurdling it forward. After it landed…she jumped in after it, retrieved it and then climbed back out using the ladder – only to do it AGAIN!  Later we noticed that she would just jump into the pool for a swim – without the ball. She would tool around the pool for 5-10 minutes and then climb out the ladder, shake herself off and run into the house. Mystery of the wet dog solved.

Story #3 for our journal:

Ball and Bath…

Bubbie goes to Rotem’s house when we are out of town or to visit her friends, Choco and XXXX. Even though she is the youngest of the three dogs, she is the dominatrix (ha ha). Her favorite friend is Choco who is about 1/4 her weight and size. Bubbie loves to play tug on the rope. She oftentimes gets tired or playful and instead of tugging, she lays down and wants you to pull her all over the house at the end of the rope. She will even turn on her back so her tummy is up and you drag her. It’s really funny. Well, Rotem didn’t know about this trick …. when we recently picked up Bubbie, Rotem tells us her latest escapades:

Bubbie got a pull rope and played tug with Choco. The next thing they saw was Bubbie PULLING CHOCO like we pull Bubbie. There was Choco at the end of the rope, on her back being pulled around the floor by Bubbie!

The also told us a variant on the pool toss trick above. Rotem doesn’t have a pool but she has a large bath tub. Apparently she was getting ready to take a bath and enters the bathroom only to see Bubbie toss in a tennis ball and jump in after it!

Good stories, huh???

Bridge on the River Kwai

Hi,

Just wanted to give you a Bubbie update.  We have “some” issues with Bubbie coming when she is called. We finally discovered the problem….she doesn’t respond as well to “regular” whistling as “normal” dogs do.  So, we tried a few options and found that she responds QUITE WELL and CONSISTENTLY to a rendition of BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI. She appears consistently on the second stanza no matter where she is!  Thank GOD we don’t have to wear khaki shorts and carry sticks ….

Wet Dog Assumptions

Hi Eric,

Well, we’re back! The flight in was a bit of a rollercoaster as there is a big storm in Israel with high winds. However, the landing was really smooth…good pilot.  Just to let you know (to be fair to El Al) the food was REALLY GOOD – they must have changed the menu and chef…we were met by Eli the cab driver who had just bought a BRAND NEW cab (three days ago – remember this point).

We then went to the dog “hotel” from the airport. It’s on the way to SION and is in a Kibbutz. It had been raining cats and dogs (and still was raining hard) so we drive into the road to the “hotel” which was FULL of mud.  We went too far and Eli had to turn the cab around, it bottomed out in a big sink hole and scraped the undercarriage. No one said a word…..We then drove up to the hotel and Gabe gets out of the car and “plunges” into a river of mud, soaking his shoes up to his socks. Eli and I exit the other side of the cab and go into the hotel. Gabe squishes behind us a few minutes later. The guy at the “hotel” tells us she is a VERY HAPPY dog and goes to get Bubbie, telling us to wait. Naturally, I’m too excited and I follow him. He’s coming with her on a leash from a little distance away and I call her and ….she goes APE SHIT. She’s SOAKING wet and jumps all over me. She hasn’t been brushed in two weeks so my sweater and pants are FULL of her wet hair. I grab her leash and take her back to the “hotel” check out area.  Eli sort of looks at this soaking wet dog, my sweater and he says, “You go to the car and I’ll carry her behind you.” I then remember that her bed is at the “hotel” (imagine bringing your own bed to Holiday Inn Express). So, the guy gets her bed and I can SMELL it before it arrives…the pillow that she sleeps on is caked with mud (I turn it over before Eli can see it) and it stinks to high heaven. Eli says, “You bring the bed, put it over the towel and I’ll bring the dog”….I guess I forget that Gabe is with us because he’s ringing out his socks.

I go to the car, place her bed on the towel and here comes Eli with this HUGE, WET, STINKING Bubbie in his arms. He places her in the bed and she moves so that she’s half in and half out of the bed so she can be closer to me (and, by the way, on the outer margin of the towel covering the seat). Eli gets into the car and turns on the AIR CONDITIONING because of the stench and waits for Gabe to wade through the river and get back into the car. I notice that Eli has placed newspaper on the floor and I’m sure it isn’t there for us to read…

We drive home and on the way Bubbie can’t contain herself so she tries three or four times to “LEAP” into the front seat and lick Gabe. There is WET, DANK, Bubbie HAIR all over the car by now….When we get home – he took a “short cut” so it took an extra 15 minutes, I get out and Bubbie LEAPS from the car to follow me, walking on the seat that I’ve vacated (where there is no towel). Although she’s “sort of” dry by this time, her paws were full of mud and there are a “FEW” prints on his new seat. I try to rub them off with the towel and only succeed in transferring the hair from the towel to his seat….Eli NEVER said a word. HOWEVER, Gabe told him to get the car washed on us…Eli said, I might have to get the inside detailed as well (Gabe agreed immediately).

Now we’re home. We turn on the water heater and 30 minutes later Bubbie and I are in the shower. She smelled SO BAD….but her breath was still nice. I washed her thoroughly while she just sat there and enjoyed it. She let me suds her for about 15 minutes. I wash her pillow and bed…and we decide that, since she slept in the bed for two weeks, she will probably be “trained” to use the bed and won’t jump up on our bed any longer. Well, you can see the results of that stupid assumption below:
