The story of how we ‘met’ Bubkiss is an interesting one….
Bubkiss was born in Israel. She is a mix between a Labrador and a Golden Retriever, which is a very popular breed here as they are smart, kind, good with kids and love to have fun. She was one of a litter of 10 and a guy from our office (Assaf) fell in love with HER and bought her as a present for his father. On the day Assaf got her, before he presented her to his father, Assaf brought Bubkiss to our office. I heard there was a dog in the office so I went down to investigate…..there in Assaf’s office was the cutest little puppy I’d ever seen. I was a goner…. but she wasn’t ours.
Later that afternoon I had a meeting with Assaf. I asked him if his dad liked dogs. He said yes but he wasn’t sure if his dad would want to own one. He was taking a chance, giving his dad a puppy. I told Assaf (without checking with my husband, Gabe) that if Assaf’s dad didn’t want the puppy, we would gladly take her. Since Gabe and I had been talking about getting a dog for at LEAST 5 years, I thought this could be the moment.
For the next two weeks, I heard NOTHING about how it was going with Bubkiss and Assaf’s father. I didn’t ASK because Assaf is one of these SUPER NICE people and I thought he might even take the puppy away from his dad if he knew how much I wanted her. I just held my breath.
DESTINY:
Two weeks later, Assaf and I had our weekly meeting. At the end of the meeting he looked at me and asked, “Were you serious about wanting the puppy? My dad doesn’t think he can handle a puppy right now.” I said very calmly, “Of course I was serious. When can we pick her up?” He said, “Tomorrow would be fine.” Well, Gabe and I immediately left work for the pet shop. We bought everything we thought a puppy would need: A bed, a pillow, two dishes, five toys to chew on, a leash, a collar, food….we were SO EXCITED!
BUPKISS MEETS HER BROTHER:
Now, at the same time we were shopping for puppy supplies, our son, Eric (who LOVES dogs) was flying to Israel from Los Angeles. He had heard me talk about wanting a dog for the last…5 years…and I honestly believe he thought it would never happen. He was due to arrive the same day we were getting Bubkiss!
The next day, we got Bubkiss….she settled into the kitchen in her big bed with a fluffy pillow. We couldn’t take our eyes of her – she was all tummy, torso and stumpy legs. As we looked at her Gabe said, “She looks more like a Dachshund than a Retriever.” I had to agree – but we decided no matter how she turned out we would love her. We got her all situated, blocked the kitchen entrance with a giant package of toilet paper rolls and set off to pick up ‘her brother’ at the airport.
The very first video of Bubkiss is on this site: ‘Who let the dogs out?’ and was taken the first day Eric arrived. When he walked into the house, I introduced him to ‘his new sister’ – he was shocked and then he melted….along with the rest of us….
